Thoughts on "Camp" beds?

Post  Alan on Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:36 pm

What have you found for "camp" beds? Since much re-enactment involves camping out, I'd be interested in what different folks have come up with.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and findings.

I use a rope tensioned timber framed bed. Over the ropes we spread sheepskins and then a thin eiderdown/quilt/doonah which we use as a mattress. Another quilt goes over the top and on than cloaks or whatever we need to keep warm. It works beautifully and takes up surprisngly little space to transport as we use the soft material as padding for the way too much fragile stuff we take with us.
cheers

I too have made a timber framed bed with tensioned rope, similar in design to Florians but a fraction larger than his. I gave it to my parents (who also re-enact) and the reports from them have been that it's very much on par with their bed at home. Smile

The question I have, is how early is the earliest known examples of the folding box style beds that people are aware of?

The earliest rope tensioned bed I have found is from the excavations at Thera. It dates to 1500 BC!

Not entirely sure what you mean by 'folding box style' bed...?

Can't remember for the life of me where it was that I have seen it before, but I seem to recall seeing somewhere, mention of a camp style rope tensioned bed that had a frame that folded up into a compact box like/trunk. Just wish my noodle brain wood dig out where it was that I had seen it before.
